You can't manufacture age.

So we are thrilled when we find wood that is genuinely aged and has a wonderful true, shabby color we can embrace.

That was the case with these two windows. I had to touch up the paint a little and seal it all with a clear finish but the original colors were the inspiration.

I started with the pink one because I immediately fell in love with the color and knew it had to be designed for a girl's room. After much debate and thought, I pieced together a couple of our wall graphics to create this Sugar and Spice design in our brown matte vinyl complimenting the brown wood showing through. Then I added a brown handle to complete the look. CUTE!!

So cute, in fact, that I decided to do another one in this mint colored window.

(Again, the original paint color).

This time I added some brown and mint buttons at the bottom as my finishing accents.

Feelin' the LOVE

Just in time for Valentine's Day!

This creation once again resulted from a little love on our part -- love for this rusty hinge that I simply could not remove. When my husband cut the door, he had to cut around it. It left this little lonesome piece of wood attached to the rusty hinge and I simply could not throw it out. So...with some vintage typewriter keys fitting perfectly in the holes and some other funky metal pieces and buttons this sweet piece developed.

I can't believe tomorrow night we will welcome in 2012!

As I think back on 2011 for Old Barn Rescue Company,

my heart is full of thankfulness and joy.

It has been an amazing year of growth for our business with so many wonderful memories.

We are asked ALL THE TIME if we have a shop. Besides the fact that Jan and I have no clue how to run a shop (other than an on line one!) we are soooo busy with creating we would never see our families if we ran one. So we do the next best thing...open up our homes every so once in awhile and invite any and everyone we know in the area to come see our wares and enjoy a glass of wine with us.

That's just what I did this past weekend here in Spokane. We had an open house on Sunday from 2-4 and had a nice little crowd of friends and family come through. Here are a few pictures from it...if you didn't make it just know, WE'LL DO IT AGAIN!

We were honored to have 3 of our windows purchased by the buyers for Pottery Barn Teen, Pottery Barn Baby, and Anthropology.

They used the 3-window combination to decorate the front wall in the teen section of Pottery Barn's new store in Frontenac, MO.

An Ugly Duckling

I LOVE transforming something ugly and out-dated into something sweet and usable. This sweet little sign evolved from such materials.

It all started out with this ugly scrap of wood, an out-dated flower brooch, a chipped up lock latch. and recycled door knob.

The latch I have had for quite awhile and I have always been drawn to the dusty pink paint that shows through all the chipping. I decided to use that as our main color. That required some paint mixing, but I covered the ugly wood and out-dated brooch to bring new life and sweetness.

Then I had to assemble it all for sturdy construction which involved some drilling, wiring, gluing and hammering. A small little pearly pink button completed the center of the brooch and hid the screw I used to attach the brooch to the door handle.

Last, but not least, I added the "You are my sunshine" quote in our brown matte vinyl and sealed it all for the finished touch. LOVE this great little transformation!

It's always fun to add some BLING with this saying...

so I found an awesome vintage plate from a dresser knob and a bright pink glitzy button:

I have this old cupboard door set aside and I think it will work perfectly for the quote and the bling!

Now, off to paint and create!

Sometimes the most unassuming piece of wood can produce such a sweet little piece! This cute little guy is the perfect example.

I had an ugly 18" x 11" piece of wood that most would be tempted to throw away, but I added some fresh dark gray paint and sanded it to keep the true imperfection of the wood. Next I had to search through buttons, jewelry, and our many odd treasures to find some compliments. The wood had a rough line along the right side that kept bugging me, so I decided to accent it and cover it up. I chose to use a small section of an old silver ruler.

Then I found the complimentary silver flower pin which I actually took apart some to get to the basic shape. I decided the pin needed a little color and "pop" in the center, so I dug through our stash of buttons. Eventually I found the perfect little yellow button!

Inspired by the yellow, I decided to go with our "You are my sunshine" quote in our yellow matte vinyl.

Once the vinyl was applied to the wood, I sealed it with a clear coat of matte polyurethane. The last step was adding the sweet finishing touches of my fun little finds! LOVE IT!

Inspiring Minds

Adonna and I love a good quote, a sweet phrase, a powerful word.

This has been at the very core of so many of our creations and, of course, our wall graphics.

Well, my daughter has an 8-year-old friend who loves all our quotes

and is curious about all my current projects.

She is always coming up with sayings of her own.

The other day for my daughter's birthday she made this card:

"If I had a cake for every time you love to laugh and smile, I would have a birthday everyday."

It was inspired by a favorite quote we have on our wall:

We have been so busy lately we totally forget we actually have a blog. Case in point...our last entry was from last spring!! Well now Jan is in the midst of final prep work for a show at John Burrough's in St. Louis this coming weekend. She's made all kinds of fun stuff from old doors and windows. I must admit that I am kind of jealous. We have so much fun creating in her basement together but I had to sit this one out (insert sad face here). I had to hold down the fort for our Etsy site which has had amazing sales this month thanks to some awesome bloggers out there that have gotten the word out - thanks to you all!!

If you live in St. Louis Jan would love for you to stop by the show this weekend and say hi! I'll be at home in WA watching the snow fall (predicted for Sat) and plugging away with our wall vinyls wishing I was there too! Here's hoping she comes home on Sunday with an empty van!

Well, we had another successful showing at Gypsy Caravan!

Adonna flew in last Wed. evening so we could go crazy creating right until the last minute and that we certainly did! It was so fun to work side by side again!

Then for the first time in 3 years, we started Gypsy Caravan without torrential rain. It was extremely hot and tiring, but we are thankful that the rain held off until 4 pm. It was great to meet new people and see many returning customers. We love that! It was also great that this time Adonna got to be on TV! Fox 2 News showed off our booth and interviewed Adonna. We got a great laugh out of it, esp. as so many people stopped by later in the day telling us that they saw her on TV in the morning. We also found out from our customers that we had a very nice write-up in the paper last week. We were so busy creating that we forgot to look for it. We're crazy like that when we start working.

Recently, people have asked to see samples of our wall vinyls on reclaimed wood. Well, to tell you the truth, we forget to take pictures of a lot of these one of a kind pieces and then they fly off the shelves (mostly at a wonderful store in St. Louis called The White Rabbit!) never to be seen again. But we took a few minutes recently to snag a few pictures of what we are working on in our quest to be ready for not only the Gypsy Caravan in St. Louis on Memorial Day but also our first show in the Pacific N.W. at a July 4th celebration in N. Idaho called Bayview Days. Tag that onto some record days of fulfilling vinyl orders and you've got two busy woman who's husbands have recently been know to ask when they will get to see us again! Planting seeds

I truly wish I was a better gardener because I LOVE flowers. I have many ideas in my head of what I would like my yard to look like, but the reality is, anything that goes in my yard better be hardy and self-sufficient because it's not going to get much assistance from me. This past Christmas my mother-in-law gave me an abundance of seeds to plant...so today was the day! It was absolutely beautiful, the perfect weather for gardening and there aren't any bugs yet! I had many seeds to plant, so I am posting this in hopes that a few a those little guys will become the flowers of tomorrow. --Jan

First day of actual spring

I'm exhausted. I don't know if we were actually crazy or just dumb but we decided, in a heartbeat, to buy 5 acres out in the Pacific NW last September. We were moving closer to family and had looked at a bazillion cookie cutter houses. We didn't actually look inside this one...just did a drive by. But, of all things, it had an adorable red barn. It haunted my dreams until we made an offer...never having seen the inside in person, only through snapshots my sister took. It's great, don't get me wrong. I LOVE waking up to the gorgeous view of the mountains and the alfalfa all greening up. I love seeing deer and hearing bird calls I've never heard before in my life. I love my extremely friendly neighbors and being able to feed the neighbors horses their daily carrots. What I don't like is the prairie grass that takes over every piece of unclaimed soil and, that, my friend, is why I am tired. I spent a good chunk of the day, in between processing orders and scrubbing my kitchen floor, digging up the prairie grass. Such is the life of a home business mom/"farm" owner! Would I trade the weeds for having winter show up again - not on your life!

As for a few updates:

We are happy to report that Adonna's surgery went well, but was certainly significant. She now has a plate and 10 screws in her upper arm. Recovery is slow - we rejoiced over her ability to tie her shoes the other day by herself. And sleep is very difficult - so your continued prayers are appreciated.

Business has been booming and for that we are incredibly thankful! Our windows with our vinyl graphics have been a big success this Fall. They are a great reuse for our old windows and make such a dramatic statement. The color of the wall shows through the glass and a 3-dimensional affect is created with the shadow of the lettering. BEAUTIFUL and so much fun to create!

Surgery Day

Our thoughts and prayers are with Adonna today as she has surgery on her arm. She has quite the recovery ahead of her and we wish for it to be trouble-free and speedy.

Good News/Bad News

We will start with the good news: Adonna and I had so much fun creating while she was in town again. We worked non-stop and into the wee hours of the night. It is a good thing, too, because the John Burrough's show was a huge success! We are glad we had so many new creations to share, and it was rewarding to see so many of them quickly snatched up!

Now for the bad news: Saturday morning, as we were taking out the last box before heading off to the show, Adonna fell off our stairs and broke her arm. CRAZY and soooo awful! My husband came to the rescue and took Adonna to the hospital while I had to go and run the show by myself.

Saturday night I came home so thrilled for the business and so sad for Adonna.

The doctors here said she would need to see an orthopedic surgeon within the week back home and gave her pain killers and wrapped her arm in a sling.

She went home early Sat. morning (complete with wheel chair assistance) and will meet with a orthopedic surgeon tomorrow morning. Please say a prayer for her and her recovery. Certainly not the way we would have liked our week to end.

We're thankful this holiday week to take a break and have Adonna rest, and we are thankful for our customers whose appreciation for our work remind us why we love what we do.

Monkey Face/When life goes bananas...Contest

I have found myself in the midst of a very frustrating technical problem with our vinyl cutter. The cutter went out last Thurs. while cutting a wholesale order. Two overnight shipments, a motherboard, a power supply, and a power switch later, we now find ourselves awaiting yet another motherboard overnight shipment! I have seen parts to our cutter and learned things about the cutter I really never cared to know. Needless to say, frustrating! And all I can do is wait yet another day while orders sit and accumulate. So, feeling the need to distract myself, I was thinking through good frustration outlets. Eliminating several unproductive options and noting another cold, rainy day, I decided to put in some music and bake cookies. It's called chocolate-chip-cookie therapy!

It seems like we took most of the summer off from creating with Adonna's move and kids being home -- so I have truly enjoyed the past few weeks rediscovering all the vintage materials we have stored up in my basement.

I found this little clear flower-shaped "dish" we had collected somewhere and knew I could find a great use for it! And you can never go wrong with a vintage glass door knob! It is so much fun to recycle and reuse!

Every Child is an Artist

I definitely have a little artist in our family and always want to encourage her amazing creativity. I love the idea of framing artwork, however, we have plaster walls and I can never narrow down which artwork to frame. So we began creating these versatile artwork hangers for people like me. So fun to create, reusing old molding and fun old fuses! -Jan

Winter is in the air

Okay, where did fall go. I know it is supposed to fall between summer and winter but it didn't show up here. It is positively freezing outside. I'm trying to bbq tri tip and I can't feel my hands. I've seen the pictures of winter in Spokane and frankly, I'm a bit scared. Already bought our snow tires and our snow thrower and thought we were all ready but now we heard about a thing called a snow rake. It's used to take the snow off your roof so it doesn't collapse under the weight of all the snow. So, now I'm even more intimidated by the upcoming NW winter. I'll have to just stay inside and design away. I think our customers might just be really thrilled that snow is in our forecast!! I'll post a picture of my lastest before I go out and check on the meat! Adonna

Been a long time

Okay, we must admit that we do not possess the blogging skill gene. Going 4 and a half months between blogs is just one small example of our ineptitude. BUT, (and I know I'm not supposed to start a sentence with "but") we are going to try overcome all our feelings of inadequacy and jump back in. Part of our sporadic-ness comes from the fact that after living in St. Louis for 7 years and working side by side with my partner in crime, Jan, my family and I have moved out West to the Spokane area. We actually bought a piece of land with a really old red barn! Though we absolutely love it out here I miss Jan every day. We are, however, continuing our work with both the wall graphics on our etsy site (www.oldbarnrescuecompany.etsy.com) and all our fun "stuff" on reclaimed wood (www.oldbarnrescue.com). I'm actually flying out in November to work on inventory and join Jan at the John Burrough's Unique Boutique (the weekend before Thanksgiving). We will have a ton of new merchandise so be sure to come by our booth and say "Hi"! (our website lists the address, dates and times!) See you in November!

I just finished these signs last night and the credit goes to my 7-year-old daughter... She wrote these words on a piece of paper and put it on her bedroom door awhile back. It made me laugh. This past fall, we took the plunge and began our new Wall Graphics Division! Due to high demand, we began searching for an avenue that would allow us to offer Adonna's hand-lettering and our popular quotes at a lower cost and quicker speed. We explored many options but were not able to mass-produce our truly vintage materials and did not want that compromised.

Our exploration eventually led us to vinyl wall graphics. We decided to give it a try, and we are certainly glad we did! We are thrilled to be able to offer Adonna’s beautiful hand-lettering with such ease, versatility, and affordability.

Vinyl wall decals are the latest new trend in home décor because they can change the look of any room in minutes without mess and extravagant cost!
